Barley Season Begins at Aberargie

There is always a sense of anticipation when the first fields are sown at Aberargie. It marks the beginning of another growing season, another step in our journey from barley to bottle, and another year of working closely with the land that surrounds our distillery.

As a family-owned farm and distillery, growing our own barley is not simply a process decision — it is part of who we are. This year, we have sown 100% Golden Promise barley across our fields, continuing our commitment to producing whisky with provenance, character and a genuine connection to place.

Why Golden Promise

Golden Promise is one of Scotland’s most iconic barley varieties. First introduced in the 1960s, it quickly became highly regarded amongst distillers for the quality and character it brings to spirit.

While modern barley varieties are often selected for high yield and efficiency, Golden Promise has retained a loyal following due to its flavour potential. It is known for producing a rich, creamy and slightly sweet spirit profile, often associated with notes of honey, soft cereal, malted biscuit and gentle fruit.

At Aberargie, flavour is always the priority. Using Golden Promise allows us to begin building character long before distillation even starts. The variety itself contributes to the texture and depth of the eventual spirit, helping create a whisky with warmth, balance and complexity.

A More Sustainable Approach

Growing our own barley gives us a far closer connection to our raw ingredients, but it also supports a more sustainable and transparent approach to whisky making.

By sourcing barley directly from our own family farm, we significantly reduce transportation requirements and maintain full oversight of how the crop is grown and managed. It allows us to work in harmony with seasonal cycles, carefully manage the land for future generations and ensure greater traceability throughout production.

There is also something deeply valuable in keeping whisky production rooted in agriculture. Distilling has always been connected to farming, and at Aberargie we are proud to continue that tradition in a meaningful and modern way.

Looking Ahead

The first shoots are already beginning to appear, and while there is still a long journey ahead before this year’s crop becomes spirit, barley season always feels like the true beginning of a whisky’s story.

From the fields surrounding Aberargie to the glass eventually poured years from now, every stage matters. This year’s Golden Promise crop is now underway — and with it, the future character of Aberargie whisky has begun to grow.
